Defining my wardrobe color palette - II

A while back I mentioned that I follow a color palette to curate my wardrobe. Since many of you asked I have created a series of posts to describe this process.

In my first post from this series I talked about how I select neutral basics for my wardrobe. This week, I'll talk about introducing accent colors.

Discovering my favorite shades that also make me look good was not done done without a lot of trial and error. I had a general idea of what colors I liked, mostly jewel tones, such as rich crimson and vermillion reds; saffron and marigold yellows, royal, sapphire and turquoise blues; aubergine purple, plum and fuschia; emerald green; and the burnt orange of rust. But there was still the task of finding out whether these colors liked me or not.

You see, whether a person looks good in a color or not depends on their skin undertone. Some people talk about this in terms of winter and summer but I just refer to these undertones as warm and cold. Whether your
complexion has warm or cold undertones is determined mostly from your skin tone, then the color of your eyes and hair.

I have a skin with warm undertone, no surprises there with my caramel skin and brownish black hair and eyes. So naturally colors with warm undertones bring out the best in me, vermillion rather than crimson, purple rather than violet and turquoise rather than cobalt blue.

But there are some colors which can be a bit too warm for my skin. Which is the case for yellows, oranges and yellowish greens. Such colors, if worn close to my face, casts an odd yellowish shadow on my skin or washes me out altogether, none of which I assure you is the most flattering. So I can only wear my favorite marigold yellow in the bottom half of my body, most often in the form of a skirt, or in an accessory.

As I have talked about before, I put a lot of care into building a wonderful neutral basic wardrobe. I chose
my neutrals in such a way that every single of my chosen accent colors also "go with" every single one of my
neutrals rather beautifully. So building an outfit with a pop of color is never a problem. The second strategy I use is, grouping colors of the same family in an outfit. I often wear many shades of purple, fuschia, plum in a beautifully harmonizing combination. And finally sometimes I choose to pair shades that would have been sitting completely opposite of each other on a color wheel, like vermillion and turquoise. I assure you they look beautiful.

Now you might ask how do I buy these items? Do I follow a list like I do for my neutrals?

The answer is no! If you have spent the effort building a beautiful neutral wardrobe, chances are you already
have gorgeous outfits to wear, so each additional item you bring into your wardrobe must result from a gut
feeling.....in other words you must truly and absolutely fall in love with it.

I am not going to scour the streets looking for a turquoise dress/ top/ skirt or what have you, but I will
wait patiently, maybe even for years for something in that shade to come to me. And when it does, trust me
you'll know. I always do.

If you still want some kind of guideline, then you can be like me and only allow a certain number of pieces in your wardrobe. I only allow myself to own 20 dresses at any point in time. Once I reach that limit, if I have a
desire for one more, then an existing one from my collection must go. It's also a way of testing how much you truly love the pieces you have.

So once you know the colors you love and look great in, keep an open eye. If something in your favorite color is so exquisite that it takes your breath away.....go ahead and try it, if you can't take your eyes off of yourself, please do us all a favor and get it, you'll love it forever, I promise.

Now that we've covered both neutrals and colors I have one last post talking about how I would create my ideal accessories wardrobe. Until then, take care and have fun building your dream wardrobe.

Last but not the least, if you liked this post, please share it on Facebook & Twitter

Happy Monday everyone! How was your weekend???
I spent mine relaxing supremely, cooking, lazing around with bf, eating leftover birthday cake for breakfast, taking catnaps in the sun streaming through my windows, reading Entre Nous/ Savvy Chic and taking photos.

I also submitted an application for a midtown apartment on the topmost floor of a highrise building, with floor to ceiling windows. I am excited, nervous and can't think of anything else but furniture at the moment. Every single outfit combination I make inspires me to create a decor palette based on the colors. BTW for those of you who are in Toronto or even Ontario, can you recommend me a good and reasonably priced re-upholsterer? I wanted to buy an old Victorian loveseat and give it a makeover, but the person I contacted first totally scared me with his quote of over $ 3000 dollars. For a loveseat???? Really!!! I could buy a gorgeous sofa from Anthropologie for that price!

Moving onto the outfit, I barely ever go for monochromatic palettes but I dreamed about this combination right before waking up one day and could not get it out of my head. So here it is.

What do you think of it?

P.S: Thanks for your thoughts on the "Spring Showers" post. I think I will go with the Lollipop Drizzle after all. I'll get it after my shopping ban ends on April 30th. So excited! :)

Spring showers

Spring is not showing any sign of being here.........other than unnaturally long but terribly cold days. But who's to stop me from preparing?

To me Canadian spring is not only about marveling at the cherry blossoms in High Park, but also about protecting myself from the daily torrential downpour. As I have worn my beloved red wellies to death in the last four years, this spring I am in the market for a pair of new rain-boots.

After much deliberation, I have narrowed my options down to the following pair. They are both versatile black, which is really important because I need them to coordinate with my winter coat as well. Both have an equestrian styling and are more or less in the same price range.

Now the Dav rain boot looks very much like a leather riding boot, which makes me a bit weary, because I do not like something pretending to be what it is not. Rain-boots are made of rubber and the Lollipop Drizzle proudly flaunts it. But the Dav, looks so much like shiny leather in the photo.....I wonder how it would look in person???
This is where I am confused....any thoughts? Suggestions? Do you own any of them?? If not which one would you choose?

P.S: I went to the doctor yesterday after being unable to write another midterm. The doctor diagnosed Sinusitis, and prescribed antibiotics....meh!!! oh well at least bf's b-day was nice and I took some photos.....coming up on Monday. Have a fantastic weekend, everyone!!!

Just a quick note

Time never stops for anyone, it flies along on it's path, regardless of whether we can keep up or not. But for me time seem to have stopped in the last few days. The flu turned into a nasty infection because I've been studying like a mad woman for the upcoming mid term and doing house-hunting in the surprisingly bitter spring weather in T.O. Your heartfelt "Get Well" wishes is probably the reason I am being able to do everything that I'm doing. :)

There is one more unit that I'm hopefully going to see today. So by tonight I would have filed an application for a nice midtown apartment.  The ones I was looking at in downtown T.O are all either out of my price range or really nasty, so for now midtown it is. Right now my head is swarming with decor ideas and I'm saving my pennies to buy some actual furniture for the new apartment, last night I even dreamed about Victorian Loveseats. LOL.

On a really happy note, yours truly was featured in Hypeed Magazine's "Well in Your Wellies" issue. Gorgeous Victoria from Justice Pirate, who thought I should enter in the first place pointed it out this morning. You can now see for yourself here. Thank you so much Victoria. You have no idea how much better my day became because of this. :)

So with that I'll leave ya'll for today. I'm not looking very photogenic at the moment, but I'll take photos after my midterm on Friday, when I celebrate bf's birthday. I've a simple but gorgeous outfit planned.

Love you all and take care.

Perspective

I am not well, a bad flu virus, exam related stress and inability to surprise a friend for her birthday is eating me from inside.

On the other hand, I am alive and well while I experience....horror struck the anguish of people from my cousin sister's country....Japan. It really all comes down to perspective.....doesn't it.....our relative well being?

So while I pray for those affected by this disaster today.....I would also like to say thanks. Thanks to the Universe or God...whomever you wish to dedicate it to.

Thank you for the love I receive every single moment.
Thank you for the little pleasures in life like a hot bowl of soup..the warmth under a duvet on a chilly morning.
Thank you for friends, family and the little furry creatures that win our hearts.

Thank you for my life, exactly the way it is.

P.S: Thanks to you folks, for liking my awkward last post titled as Cape Girl. On Victoria's kind suggestion I submitted it to Hypeed magazine's "Well in your wellies" issue. I think you will also be able to vote for me, how exciting! Wish me luck!

Cape girl

Ummm no pun intended. That's exactly what bf kept calling me since he laid eyes on me in this cape. I was really excited to debut this beauty, so I took my time carefully coordinating colors and had picked out a gorgeous location down in the ravine. But of course the wonderfully eclectic Toronto weather had to pour ice-cold water on my plans, LITERALLY!

As soon as I got out I was greeted by a blast of wind, that promptly gave me a radical hair style and upturned my umbrella. By the time Rishi had done his business and managed to get enough mud on both our shoes, I had lost all hope for a photo shoot.

But then seeing me sad, bf was kind enough to shoot these photos (gotta love him).....where else but the recycling area behind the building!!! How charming!!!

Despite my windwrecked hair and the scenic background......these did not come out half as bad, no? What do you think?

Happy Monday everyone!!!

A journey of inseparable love

It is almost never that I post all the photos of an editorial. But this particular one by Nicolina Patricia Malina moved me in a way beyond awe. Set against a gorgeous early 20th century colonial southeast Asia "A Journey of Inseparable Love" make me nostalgic for an era I had always wished to witness. What choice did I have to but to add them to my journal of sartorial inspirations!

As howling winds rattle my window on this sunny morning, I wonder why spring is not coming sooner. I wonder why like many things in my life this change is taking such a long time to take place! I like change, mind you, but what I do not like is not knowing.....and the time that we spend in waiting. But I have a feeling what is coming will be better than what is, much better. And so I calm myself with a warm and fragrant bath, imagine that best possible outcomes and count my blessings. I am truly very grateful you know, grateful that I have you, many of you, who care on a level deeper than I would have thought possible over the interweb. I have been erratic with my posting, commenting, getting swept off my feet by the torrential river that we call life, but still you are here, waiting patiently....letting me be human.

Thank you.
