What's in my backyard

I know outfit posts have been few and far between after my move. One reason is definitely bf's hectic work schdeule, but another is the lack of secluded spaces for me to set up a tripod in this busy midtown neighbourhood. The day I took these photos I had to walk around for an hour to find an empty spot on a partcularly pretty belt line trail. It seems people in my area love to jog and they are certainly not aware of personal style blogging. So finally tired and desperate I ventured into the Mt. Pleasant Cemetary. I think it must be the biggest and most beautiful cemetery in Toronto.

I'm just a little scared of venturing off alone into a cemetary so I kept close to the entrance, but slowly I am gaining courage, so perhaps next time I'll have some more photos of beautiful tombstones and crypts for you. On my way back, I found  this almost perfect maple leaf that had just fallen........it seems like fall is slowly creeping upon us. Can you feel it in the air?

Zoological thoughts

I'm not sure I've often shared my love of animals on this blog. I have always had a curious passion for them, which my mother said I inherited from my father. After all it was he who tried to domesticate anything from wild monkeys to white mice, when it was just not done in our country. Most of the few charities I support work with animals, but many think I have not got my priorities right. How can I spend my money on non-animal tested products when there are hungry people in this world? In other words how can I give more importance to animals when there are humans to be helped! I always reply, with a smile, "But someone's gotta think about them!" But I wonder is there a straight answer to this dilemma? After all who gives us the right to value one life over another and decide a human life is superior than that of an animal. Can we even compare the importance of lives? Should we even try? Isn't it inhuman?

I help animals because not many people think about them as our equals or even understand that they have a life just like us and unlike humans they can not help themselves. As far as I understand it is really us that are responsible for many of the issues that animals face, if we don't help them, there really is no one that can.

Often zoos make me sad. You can clearly see that the animals are not in their best spirits, and honestly I wouldn't be either if I was removed from my home and locked up in a cage. But I do understand that sometimes it is necessary. Many of the animals in the Toronto Zoo are endangered, many don't exist in large numbers in their natural habitat anymore or don't breed enough. The people at the zoo really try their best to make sure these animals don't go extinct and can live as peacefully as possible in an artificial environment.

I go every other year to the Toronto Zoo. It is an experience that makes me really happy. In another life I would have liked to work with animals, preferably monkeys, apes, bears and big cats. But in this life spending some time with them, petting, feeding and caring for them makes me happy enough. They have a polar bear family, a group of African penguins (I thought they only lived in south pole!!!) and a school of sting-rays at the zoo that's new to me this year. If you're in Toronto I would really recommend a look-see.

Meet me at The Distillery

Distillery District is one of the few places in Toronto where the city has tried to salvage a fragment of its history. This is the site of the former Gooderham and Worts distillery and is now home to some of the best preserved Victorian industrial structures in North America. The buildings framing the brick lined streets have now transformed into quirky cafes, artisan chocolate shops and bakeries, one of a kind boutiques, art galleries, antique shops and restaurants serving some of the best local brews.

I have photographed it before here, but I swear each time it presents itself to me in a different light and I discover yet another detail, like a hobbit sized door. This is probably the first place I'll visit after I purchase a decent camera. :)

Boot reckoning

Canadian winters demand good boots, but flat boots with the right fit that look good with dresses and skirts are so incredibly hard to find. I have been planning to get a pair of riding boots for the longest time now. But after finally saving up to buy an authentic riding boot from Equestrian Collections I discovered even the shortest shafts are too long for me. I suppose nobody really considers how these boots might look with anything other than riding pants. On me they'll definitely go over the knee, but into the territory where they're neither OTK boots nor riding boots. You know what I mean?

So after much thinking I am starting to consider ankle boots. I saw a friend sporting one late last winter, but
her's was more like a bootie with a bit of heel, so I'm not sure how flattering the 1" heel, almost flat ones would be. Logically thinking even with my knee length skirt and dresses they should allow plenty of bare leg, to look interesting. But apparently they make legs look shorter. So I'm a bit unsure.

Here are a few options I've narrowed down. As you can see I'm a sucker for menswear style brogue detailing and cowboy boots. I guess the only way I'll know is if I try on a pair.

1. Frye Carson shortie - Cognac, 2. River Island light brown ankle brogue boots, 3. Asos Aiden leather lace up brogue boots, 4. Frye Carson shortie - Black

Do any of you wear ankle boots with skirts or dresses? How do you feel about them?

**Ahem, I just realized this is the second Fall themed post in the last two days. Forgive me guys, I don't want to pour water on your Summer enjoyment, but I'm just really excited for Fall. :)**

Twinkle Twinkle

Lounging around

It's been really gloomy here in T.O....feels like the warm, sunny days are coming to an end. The arrival of cooler days inevitably leaves me in need of comfortable and quirky lounge-wear. On a rainy/windy/chilly day, I love nothing more than to curl up on my couch with a mug of tea and a mystery novel in some cute and comfy loungers. Below are some pieces I found that require the minimal amount of fuss while providing the maximum amount of comfort and style. Perhaps a few of these should be my back to school treats for this year!!!

What do you find yourself wishing for on a rainy/ windy/ chilly day?
